The CLAP! process allowed my students to engage with literature in a more fun and imaginative way. All the students in the class gave their creative input for the shooting of a spin-off "soap opera" based on our literature text, which provided an opportunity for the class to bond and learn to work together. Shooting the soap opera empowered students to step out of their comfort zones and to develop their skills in directing, acting and camera work. It was exciting to watch them explore their talents and develop their confidence in new areas.

— Ruby Pan

"CLAP is a hands-on approach in the learning and teaching of English Language with oral communication and writing skills integrated. Students involved were actively engaged in the usage of English Language and they especially enjoyed the process - doing the research, coming up with the script and story-board, and being in front of the camera. It is a good way to identify talents too!"

— Toh Ji Rong

CLAP has become an important tool in the teaching of English Language at Greenridge Secondary School since its inception in 2003. Since then, I have implemented CLAP in many of my English classes. Although the output may not always be outstanding, I believe that all the students have benefited from the process: they are more engaged; they learn that English is not always about writing, they have fun while learning and best of all, they achieve a sense of pride when they view the final product. This sense of achievement and pride in the students is something that we cannot otherwise achieve with traditional and less innovative methods of teaching

— Sharifah Nur Famela

CLAP has provided a platform to students to express their ideas through multimedia. It has helped students to build their confidence in oral communication skills. The entire process can be tedious and also take up a significant part of your curriculum time. However, the students seem to be engaged and learn through this programme.

— Ms Durgamu d/o Tinagaran

I was first introduced to the highly-acclaimed Camera, Lights and Action Programme (CLAP) in Greenridge Secondary School within a few weeks of my joining the school. During the orientation. I remember being wowed by the fact that the school possessed a spaking new film studio, fifth generation editing computers and even a blue wall for filming special effects. The only other time I had seen a blue wall was at the Movie World in Gold Goast, Australia.

— Mrs Grace Chin

CLAP is certainly another teaching tool that teachers can consider using in classroom. There are many different types of learning in a class of forty and this approach does reach out to the few that enjo film work and camera

— Mrs Karen Heng

Initially, students were struggling with the creation of storyboards and scripts. Nevertheless, they were able to complete the work well after their group discussion. The collaborative learning before the production of film exposes the students to new ideas and perspectives of their peers. That will also help to develop and stretch their thinking when they had to piece all the ideas of the group members together.

— Ms Chong Lai Khar

Clap is an EL lesson module spread over a period of two weeks. It gives room for students to investigate, research, read up on a topic. At the story-boarding stage, the students work cooperatively to visualize how the script will appear on the screen. Then they are taught broadcast writing skills and learn to critique each other’s script. Through self and group reflection, students make improvement to their scripts. Furthermore, the students learn the basic filming techniques and video-editing skills from the technical assistant in school. On the whole, Clap has been a great learning experience for both teacher and students.

— HoKeeSiong

"The CLAP is an interactive learning tool. It has plenty of opportunities for students to engage in oral communication and discussion. They have to make presentations within their group as well as to a wider audience. Students can also improve their wrting skills through scripting and reflection."

— Mrs Tan Siew Heng

CLAP is an innovative approach to engage pupils in the learning of the English Language through video production. It takes pupils through the process of brainstorming for an appropriate topic, scripting and storyboarding right up to the editing of the video clip. CLAP enables the pupils to work as a team and they have to adopt a role in the actual filming process. It also serves as a platform for pupils to practise their oral communication skills. Pupils are more conscious of their diction and pronunciation before the camera.

— Ms Shannon Yap

CLAP adds another dimension to the teaching and learning of English. The student get involved in co-operative learning, take on different roles and finally end up on the most exciting part, filming. The teacher plays a supporting role as a facilitator. They enjoy CLAP as it allows them a free hand to select topic, do storyboarding, scripting and editing. The teacher just has to make sure that each exercise is manageable and urge them on to keep to the schedule. They will love it.

— Mr Odayappan

CLAP is one of the platforms for teachers to engage their students in different pedagogical areas: from writing a script to presenting their script in a confident manner. The class involved in CLAP was very engaged and dedicated to their work as they can finally come up with a work that they can call their very own and which they can showcase to the school. Throughout the process, students learnt how to come up with a story that is interesting enough and that requires them to know, for example, the features of a narrative story that are required to make a story exciting and engaging. They also learnt how to present themselves in a confident manner as well as how to work within certain group dynamics. It is certainly an engaging experience for the students involved.

Camera, Lights and Action Programme (CLAP) is an English Language school based innovation that started humbly at the end of 2005. The primary purpose of CLAP is to improve our students’ oral, written and spoken English Language through the production of news bulletins, documentaries and videos.

CLAP website chronicles the journey of this pedagogy approach using media broadcast technology. CLAP is a student-centred approach, where students are guided by teachers and peers to visualise how the script will appear on screen after brainstorming and research. In the process they are taught storyboarding and communication skills- pitching to audience, purpose and contexts- cognized with video culture.

In the CLAP website, students have the opportunity to share, learn and see the large collection of photos, videos that they have produced with their friends and teachers. It gets them excited and also stretches their imagination far and wide. It can also serves as a useful platform for discussion of their newsworthy work through this medium.

With our students being very IT-savvy and immersed in a globalized mix of cultures, the utilization of digital media becomes widely embraced and accepted, teachers included. Students are more engaged and energized as they embrace this popular culture of learning, where both the tool and content become relevant to what they are exposed to in their real lives.

The teaching of English Language has become more exciting and current to both teachers and students. The language becomes alive- for everyone to see, hear and feel. In turn, students benefit from this hands-on approach to learning, and discover hidden talents.

Continue to discover yourselves in this exciting technicolour journey. Enjoy, appreciate and acquire new knowledge!
