INTRODUCTION

Greenridge Secondary is one of the 29 schools that MOE is partnering under the Teach Less, Learn More (TLLM) initiative, in order to bring about school-based Curriculum Innovations.

Mrs Shirley Tham HOD EL was appointed as a Research Activist in July 2006. She will spend time doing research on a curriculum innovation. Her research area is titled ‘Developing greater student engagement and interaction in the classroom through the Camera, Lights, and Action Programme (CLAP).

CLAP is bringing broadcast technology and video production into the English lessons. The students learn English Language skills through writing, storyboarding, and directing the production of news stories.

The school has obtained the LEAD ICT school fund which encourages experimentation and engagment in research projects to push the frontiers of using ICT in teaching and learning. The fund helps the school to achieve higher levels of ICT use in curriculum and encourages rigour in school research as she embarks on experimentation in emerging ICT-based pedagogies. Additionally, it recognises and supports the strategic plans of the school to use IT for engaged learning.

A newsworthy topic is identified. Students read, investigate, research on the topic and identify who their audiences are. They discuss the impact of the topic on their personal lives, their country or even globally

A synopsis is written and developed into a full length script with speaking parts. The film genre: new bulletin, documentary or short film is reflected. Students visualize how thier script would appear on screen. They collaborate on their storyboards and design it with stick, manga or cartoon drawing.

Students learn to assign roles: producers, directors or actors/actresses to one another. They memorise their lines and rehearse their acting roles. They listen attentively for personal oral techniques that need improving

Film techniques: shot list (close-up, mid, long and wide) are learnt. The language of movies: pan, set or cast is taught. They practice looking into the eye of the camera. When producing a news bulletin, they learn to address issues, conduct interviews and perform before the camera.

Video editing skills are taught. They critique each video clip after production. They learn about special effects and lighting techniques
